March 2017 - A Very Wet Winter Indeed.

Yes, there were VERY few days like this during the 2016-17 winter SH season. - Adventures Across Oregon LLC Photography

As I write this, river levels are about twice the size of "fishable" and visibilty is next to nothing. Still, there have been a few predictable lulls between back-to-back systems this winter where the fishing was good.

The trick is to not give up on winter steelhead opportunities now! Often March and April are the best times to connect with these elusive and wild unicorns on the fly.

Summers in Oregon Are Hard to Beat...

June 2016: Welcoming trout season and just about everywhere/every system is fishing well this year. All the snow pack Oregon received coupled with the fact nicer days landed a bit on the early-side again has meant anglers can disperse and target just about every species. Plenty of room to escape and connect with nature!

AAO has experienced some outstanding fishing on the coast for cutties, in the central part of the state for redsides (in big rivers), as well as local Portland private lakes.

So...time to dust off those 5 wts and put em' to the test - Cheers!!

June 18th update: Oregon is having unusually dry and sunny weather this summer right out of the gates... Many of the local hatches fly anglers get most excited about were short lived this spring. Lower elevation lakes are already almost too warm to continue fly fishing (essentially a month early) so higher elevation lakes have been the ticket.

Adventures Across Oregon LLC Photography They're out there! Gorgeous spotted sea-run cutty I got to net for a client the other day. Adventures Across Oregon LLC Photography

However; coastal tributaries have been fishing quite well for resident cutthroat and we have encountered quite a few sea-run fish too (above) which is always fun for clients. So, by all means, don’t let the dry conditions deter you, just change the game a bit! We have seen some simply outstanding days on the water this summer so far.

Spring Trout 2015

#QuitWishinGoFishin!

With many Oregon rivers and lakes opening this month, the opportunity to connect with hungry trout keyed into midges and mayflies is on. Also, the mild winter we had means the hatches are on the early side. Come by the shop (H&H Basecamp in Forest Grove) for ideas, new fly gear, or to take one of our primer classes before hitting the water.  Hope to see ya out there!

We had 6 anglers on the lake this day and during one moment; three of them had fish on at the same time.

A customer later commented, "I have never experienced anything like that in my life!”

The World Renown North Umpqua - Sept 2013

While doing some reconnaissance and exploring the North Umpqua trails for trail running next season, it led to some incredible fly fishing for steelhead. The river was in perfect shape and autumn colors were really beginning to show. The fish were there and willing to grab a swung fly.

Salmon Fly Season on the Deschutes - May 2013

Why would you want to fish anything else but salmon fly dries on the surface for native rainbows when they are keyed into them? Nice sized trout were detonating on the giant bugs! We mostly fished upstream and tight to the bank, and usually against the wind.

Springtime on One of Oregon's Most Scenic Spring Creeks - March 2013

Oregon Fly Fishing Adventures Across Oregon LLC

There is nothing quite like spending an afternoon with your dog, soaking up the spring sun, and connecting with one of the most scenic spring creeks on earth; the Metolius River in Central Oregon. 6 weeks ago, this exact same place was covered in snow. Now it is alive with emerging insects and selective native rainbows who occasionally rise to eat them.

Steelhead on the Ronde - Nov 2012

Grande Ronde Fly Fishing Adventures Across Oregon LLC Photography

Fly fishing the Grande Ronde from Boggan's down to Shoemakers... It was an amazing  day to be on the river; warm weather (quite warm for this time of year actually), good water levels/visibility and great company! This stretch of the Ronde is beautiful, no homes and only the canyon walls and wildlife to watch. We had a fair amount of action too. One native and one hatchery landed on nymph and indicator set ups and another fish on for a brief moment after slowly swinging a wet fly with a spey rod along a classic gravel bar slick. Take a look at the shoulders on this hachery fish.

Somewhere - Oct 2012

This time of year is unreal in Oregon as things set up for another long winter... the trout fishing was quite good with fish focused on consuming insects. It snowed quite a few times which added to the excitement of things too.

The Salmon Are Back - Aug 2012

...and so are the boats. "Chinook Alley" on the Columbia river was a complete frenzy on Monday. Nets were flying everywhere and so were the smiles. A crisp, cool morning led to perfect fishing weather. Find the bait balls and seams, locate the pelicans dive bombing left and right... then fish on. This is really something you have to experience firsthand. I picked up a chinook over 20lbs and Wendy netted a hatchery coho that was huge and chrome bright...it gave her a fight to remember.

Fall is a fantastic time of the year for fishing, not to mention the table fare. We are always very thankful for the bounty too; eating BBQ salmon fillets with fresh garden veggies. It just doesn't get any better. This is our window to collect a few while they still have sea lice on them and taste their absolute best. Soon we will be switching gears and fly fishing, careful to release these creatures while trying not to get in their way as they continue their incredible odyssey.

Many thanks to the salmon and steelhead which return every year only to travel miles and miles upstream to mate and spawn. It is an epic journey. One worth celebrating and never ever taking for granted.

Coastal Cutthroat on Dries - July 2012

The end of July is the ideal time to dust off your 3 weight and throw little bugs at native fish that have been lethargic all winter long. On many of the coastal tribs you can also can get lucky and hook a searun cutthroat trout.

Middle Deschutes - May 2012

Oregon Fly Fishing Adventures Across Oregon LLC Photography

Salmon flies were just starting to show in numbers. We scored an incredible day covering lots of water, deep down in the canyon.  We caught predominantly rainbows (a handful each), and a few were nice sized bows; 17 and 18 inch fish.

As the day progressed, we slowly shifted our focus from nymphing behind boulders to dries in fast water and fooled a couple of healthy fish that way... A size 12 march brown ended up being the ticket despite all of the big bug distractions.
